The Infamous... Green Tortoise Hostel
The cheapest way to stay in Seattle is in a hostel. The least expensive hotels are $85, and most are closer to $150. A hostel is only $15-$20. However, you will be sharing a room with at least four other people. You will also be sharing a not so clean bathroom. There will be no parking, although you can easily rent parking close by. None of these places have crazy policies like some hostels in Europe where you have a curfew or can be locked out if you don't get in by a certain time.
Hostels are a great deal if you don't mind a little sharing. They also offer a great opportunity to meet people. Try to get reservations if possible before you visit. I'm including a rating of the area they are located in-- "A"=Excellent to "F"=Awful. This rates only the neighborhood and especially the neighborhood's general safety level relative to other places; not the hostels facilities. Help me and the world out by e-mailing me what you think of these places after you stay there.
In August 1996, our readers asked... " I don't really know what a hostel is and how it is different from a hotel (except that it's smaller). I would greatly appreciate it if you could clarify this for me. "
A hostel is a "low grade" budget hotel. The
differences are:
* People share a bathroom with people on the same hotel floor
* People share a sleep room of about 6 people
* Usually no parking
* Usually should lock belongings in a locker of some kind in the room; shouldn't bring
high grade valuables.
They are an easy way to save $ for "backpack" type travelers. however, They
don't make for a "romantic" getaway for couples typically.
