San Juan Island - Friday Harbor

Restaurant Recommendations

Beautiful views - questionable food?.

Food around Friday Harbor is definitely a mixed bag. With a tourist economy - restaurants range from greasy fare to upscale. We ate at two restaurants - one that was great - and one that was awful.

Microbrews - Great Location - Prompt Service

The Great: The Market Cafe located at 225 "A" Street had super sandwiches; a variety of ice tea and beer; and very high quality ingredients. The place was packed and includes sunny patios with a view of the water. Its a bit loud inside, but the sandwiches were excellent and served very promptly. Its clearly a favorite of locals and return visitors. 360-378-4546

The OK: Friday Harbor's Front Street Alehouse does what it needs to. They serve beer and pub food quickly for visitors on their way to or from the ferry boats. Service was quick, friendly, and efficient. The food was reasonably good and hit the spot when you are hungry. We'd highly recommend Friday Harbor Alehouse over the nightmare below:

Too much time on hair... not enough on food or service....

The Awful: If I was to write a story on how to make a bad restaurant - "Friday's Crabhouse and McFriday's (McDonalds attorneys are you listiening?)" would be my choice. We should have known it was bad when the waitress referred us to another local restaurant when the "McFriday's" hamburger section was closing down. This restaurant's hook is their awesome view of the ferry harbor and boats. Their upper patio has one of the best views on the island. Unfortunately, they take advantage of their real estate with awful food and dreadful service.

From placing our order to a surly cook - to the beer that never arrived - to multiple other customer complaints -- this greasy mess of a restaurant is to be avoided at all costs. It was so bad that it was almost laughable. Most everything is deep fried, and the food arrives randomly / often sent to the wrong table with an unintelligible name. The service on the upper deck attempted to make amends, but the place is a joke. Avoid Friday's Craphouse at all costs. 65 Front Street - 360-378-8801
